We're having a Holiday!

Hallelujah!!! Today is an unexpected holiday in honour of the peace treaty signed yesterday between the Maoists and the ruling democratic parties. The children are going home from school, and our language lessons were cut short! Wow!

We are doing well. Thankyou for praying: Kristy is no longer feeling sick, the children are finding friends, and Robert is in his element with a new bike.

Everything seems so different here in Kathmandu. Would you think that goat meat is the most expensive meat that you can buy (and you can watch them make the goats into meat too)? We're supposed to be able to see Mt.Everest, but the smog is too thick to make out anything in the distance. Most people here wear masks when walking/riding down the street. People here find handkerchiefs gross so they just spit on the street - watch where you walk! It also seems that you can purchase and see a lot in Kathmandu: as long as you hunt hard enough and buy as soon as you see it. Unfortunately we can't seem to find Zinc Oxide baby cream (thankgoodness we brought a little because Theo is in need of it). Lately Kristy bought a warm shawl and Nepali clothes - it's the least she thinks she can do to fit in and not seem so obviously bideshi (foreigner).

Our language lessons are progessing: Robert seems to have a hidden talent for aquiring languages. Kristy likes to learn language that helps her in her everyday life - but is having a hard time memorizing. (Be careful to say "teacher"(guru) instead of "stupid ox"(goru).)

Who would've thought we'd adjust so quickly? We're really looking forward to moving to Tansen in December - everyone tells us how beautiful it is. We're a little apprehensive about the incoming cold and lack of indoor heating in these concrete buildings though. Yesterday morning it was so cold we could see our breath outside. We'll know it's really cold when we can see our breath inside too. At least there's no snow (at least not in this part of Nepal).

Namaste
